Choosing an IP video surveillance camera isn't just about megapixels. The optics, night vision, weather protection, and AI analytics make the difference between an installation that performs and one that falls short. In this guide, we'll clearly explain what to look for to make the right choice.
What is an IP camera?
An IP camera is a video surveillance camera that connects to a network (via Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi) and transmits video digitally. Compared to older analog cameras, it offers higher resolution, smart features, and the ability to view remotely from a mobile device or computer. Additionally, with PoE, it receives power and data through a single cable, greatly simplifying installation.
Key factors for choosing your IP camera
- Resolution (megapixels): More MPs mean more detail. 4MP is a good standard; 5MP or 8MP (4K) are for when you need to identify faces or license plates at a distance.
- Fixed or motorized lens: A fixed lens (e.g., 2.8 mm) covers a wide angle and is ideal for close-up areas. A motorized or varifocal lens allows you to adjust zoom and angle remotely, perfect for varying distances.
- Night vision: Look at the IR range (in meters). Cameras with dual light (IR plus warm light) also offer color images at night.
- WDR (Dynamic Range): Essential in scenes with high contrast (entrances, backlighting). A WDR of 120 dB or more prevents overexposed or underexposed areas.
- IP and IK protection: For outdoor use, look for IP66 or IP67 (dust and water) and IK10 (vandal-proof). In coastal or saline environments, opt for anti-corrosion models.
- PoE power: A single cable for video and power. Check the standard (PoE 802.3af or PoE+ 802.3at) according to power consumption.
- Storage: Onboard MicroSD card, NVR recording, or network recording (FTP, NAS). The ideal is to combine local and centralized recording.
- ONVIF compatibility: Ensures the camera works with recorders and software from different manufacturers.
Types of IP cameras
- Bullet: Elongated and visible, with good range. Ideal for outdoors and as a deterrent.
- Dome and turret: Discreet and durable, perfect for ceilings and high-traffic areas.
- 180º or 360º Panoramic: Covers large areas without blind spots with a single camera.
- PTZ: Motorized, with pan, tilt, and zoom to track subjects.
Smart features that make a difference
- AI analytics: Detection and classification of people and vehicles, line crossing, and intrusion, reducing false alarms.
- LPR (License Plate Recognition): For vehicle access control and parking lots.
- Active deterrence: Siren and lights that scare off intruders in real-time (TiOC-type technologies).
- Facial detection and smart search: Quickly locate a person or vehicle in hours of footage.
- Anti-corrosion: For ports, coastal areas, and chemical environments, where salinity damages conventional cameras.
